A short drive from Puglia, in the region of Basilicata, lies one of the most astonishing places in Italy.
Matera is built around the Sassi: ancient cave dwellings and churches carved into the limestone ravine, inhabited for thousands of years and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At night, when the lights come on across the stone, the city looks like a living nativity scene. Few settings in the world leave guests so speechless.
Matera offers fewer wedding venues than Puglia, but an unmatched sense of drama and history. Here we know places like Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, where guests sleep in restored cave rooms lit by candlelight, and Tenuta Danesi.
Matera is easy to reach from Bari airport, but less simple to move around once you're there. The Sassi are a maze of steps and narrow lanes with limited vehicle access. However, with careful planning, it becomes part of the magic rather than a challenge.
